Whatton and Aslockton Cricket Club

Our cricket club has been traced back in our records and the archives of Nottingham library and the earliest record that can be found is that the club, then known as Whatton Cricket Club played a match in 1815 against a side from Car Colston and Screveton. Our records show that in 1870 Captain Edward Hall of Whatton Manor was the President of the Club, a position held by a member of the Hall family until 1919.  A record shows that on Tuesday 16th May 1876 a match between Stathern United C.C. played a friendly match against Whatton-in-the-Vale which resulted in favour of Stathern; Whatton batting first scored 78 runs with Mr. Pell scoring 25 runs and Stathern scoring 100; Whatton batted again scoring 44 with 13 extras being recorded. Prior to 1898 the club played on a ground behind the ‘Griffins Head’ at Whatton. Apparently during the season of 1897, a visiting team (Notts. Police) took rather a lot of persuading to vacate the Griffin Head after a lunchtime break, much to the annoyance of Captain Hall. He called an extra ordinary general meeting because he felt that the club needed a fresh start after such goings on following a disastrous season. At this meeting he informed the committee that he had arranged the transfer to our present home on Dark Lane, arrangements were made with the ex-groundsman from Trent Bridge to supervise the laying of a new playing square for the 1898 season.

The season of 2020 will see 122 years since we started playing on the field and at least 205 years since the Club was formed. Many thanks must go to the members and friends who have worked very hard keeping the club active over the years.

We are always striving to improve the playing conditions and facilities at the club to encourage our players to play at the highest standards. This we feel creates more local interest for the spectators and friends of the club.

We would welcome new players, umpires and members to join a friendly village club with ambitions to further the game of cricket at local level.

We would also welcome friends and followers to become Vice-Presidents or even sponsor a match.
